Reformer pilates is a form of the Pilates method performed on a specialized piece of equipment called the Pilates reformer machine. The reformer puts all of those principles to work through a sliding carriage, a foot bar, and adjustable resistance springs that challenge your muscles in ways mat work alone can’t replicate. The machine provides resistance and support simultaneously, so it adapts to your fitness level rather than the other way around.
The pilates reformer consists of a flat sliding platform called the carriage, which moves along a frame and connects to a set of resistance springs. You adjust the spring tension by adding or removing springs, which changes the difficulty of any given movement.
A foot bar sits at one end of the machine, with straps and handles at the other. Depending on the exercise, you’ll push with your feet, pull with your hands, or lie back while the carriage moves beneath you. Most reformer machines also include adjustable shoulder rests and headrests, so the setup fits your body, which helps ensure the work goes exactly where it should.
Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates are both grounded in the same Pilates method, but the experience of each is quite different.
Mat Pilates relies entirely on your body weight and gravity. Mat work demands significant core strength and stability because nothing is helping you. It’s accessible anywhere and requires no equipment. You’ll notice many of the same pilates exercises you’d find in a reformer class.
The reformer adds a broader range of motion and adjustable resistance. The sliding carriage creates instability that challenges balance and coordination in a way that mat work doesn’t. The spring resistance lets you add load to movements without weight training. You can also do reformer pilates exercises that simply aren’t possible on a mat, like leg circles in the straps or footwork variations on the foot bar.
For someone new to Pilates, the reformer supports the body through its movements while still promoting muscle engagement. For someone more experienced, the same machine challenges balance, spring tensions, and muscle groups in ways that can take years to fully work through.
Neither is better than the other. They train differently, and many people do both.
A reformer pilates class typically runs 45 to 55 minutes. You’ll spend the session moving through a series of reformer exercises that work your whole body, while a certified pilates instructor guides the group through each movement and cues proper form.
Classes usually move through a progression. You might start with footwork on the foot bar, move into leg circles with the straps, work through upper body pulling exercises, and finish with stretching. The instructor adjusts spring tension for different exercises and offers modifications as needed so people at different fitness levels can follow along.
Group classes are common in pilates studios, and they range from beginner-focused sessions with basic exercises to advanced classes that assume you already understand how the reformer works. Private sessions are also available at most pilates studios if you want one-on-one attention from a certified pilates instructor, which is especially useful when you’re learning for the first time.
Reformer pilates is a low-impact workout by design. The controlled movements and precise muscle engagement mean you’re working hard without putting stress on your joints.
The benefits of reformer pilates show up across your whole body over time. This isn’t a workout that promises dramatic results in a week. It builds in layers.
Core strength is the foundation. Almost every Pilates reformer exercise requires the abdominal and deep stabilizing muscles to remain engaged. That engagement trains your core to work the way it’s supposed to during movement.
Better posture follows from that core work. When your abdominal muscles, back muscles, and stabilizers are all doing their jobs, your spinal alignment improves. People who do reformer Pilates consistently often notice they stand differently and that their backs feel better.
Beyond the core, reformer pilates works specific muscle groups that other workouts tend to miss. The inner thighs, the small muscles around the shoulder, the hip flexors, and the muscles along the spine. The reformer accesses all of them through different exercise positions and spring configurations.
Other health benefits include:
Reformer pilates also offers something that strength training and cardio don’t. It’s a workout that asks you to move with intention. That mental focus is a real part of why people keep coming back.
The honest answer is almost anyone. The reformer supports different fitness levels because the machine itself adapts. Spring tension can be lowered for beginners and raised for those who want more of a challenge. Exercise modifications exist for most movements, so someone recovering from an injury can often still participate with guidance from a certified pilates instructor.
That said, reformer pilates isn’t a passive experience. The controlled movements require focus and body awareness in ways that a standard gym workout doesn’t always demand. That attention is part of what makes it effective.
People who tend to get the most out of it are those who want a full body workout without joint stress, who want to build core strength alongside flexibility, or who want more variety and resistance than mat work provides. Pilates reformer classes are also popular with athletes using them for cross-training and people returning to exercise after a break or an injury.
At VASA, we believe fitness works best when it’s accessible without being watered down. Pilates fits that standard. Pilates STUDIO brings reformer-based, coach-led training inside VASA that is designed to build strength, improve stability, and support how your body moves and performs long-term.
Classes run on spring-based reformer machines with a certified coach guiding every session. Three class types are Foundations, Define, and Burn. They cover all experience levels, from first-timers to those looking for a serious athletic challenge. STUDIO Pilates is available at select locations, with more coming.
Nuestro STUDIO membership gives you access to the full STUDIO lineup, including STUDIO Pilates where available. It’s a fraction of what dedicated reformer studios charge per session.
